Dinner update!

Our family dinners take a lot of effort but I think in the end it will pay off! On Sunday hubby ate the salmon and artichoke, KK ate the artichoke and garlic bread, Aly ate the rice and garlic bread, and I ate everything!

On Monday I made honey and lemon chicken and put two breasts aside and make home made chicken nuggets. The chicken nuggets were the best thing on the plate that night! Hubby at the chicken and broccoli, KK ate apple slices, Aly ate the rice, chicken nuggets, and apple slices, and yes, I ate everything!

On Tuesday hubby ate only the steak. KK was lucky and I specially made her her own artichoke and that is all she ate, Aly ate the steak, noodles, and raspberries, and yes, once again I was the only one who ate everything!

Tonight is pizza night so I know the girls and I will eat just fine!

We are enjoying the family dinners but I still feel frustrated that everyone eats so differently and I am the only one that eats everything. Oh well, I don't know what else I can do. Maybe over time we will all learn to eat more cohesively.

Cruella De Vil

This year the girls have dalmatian costumes for Halloween. They actually got the costumes for their birthday present. I am so glad they are nice and warm too! Last year we went to the Halloween Festival at the school and plan to do the same thing again this year. The event is mostly outside so I am happy they will be nice and warm.

Since they are being cute little dalmatians, wouldn't it be fun if I dressed up as Cruella De Vil? I am really excited to see if I can piece together a costume. I told Aly about my idea and she thought it would be great! I told KK about my idea and she didn't like it! She is scared of Cruella! My guess though is when she sees me dress up she we be o.k. with it.

I know I could buy a costume on the Disney website but I thought it would be more fun to go thrift store shopping and see if I can make my own! Looks like the authentic Cruella wears a black dress, white fur coat, red gloves, and red shoes. I will have to buy the wig as I am sure I can't make that or find it at a thrift store. If I can't find a cheap white coat, I have some fleece spotted fabric that I can use to make a shawl. Wish me luck! I think this is going to be fun! The only part I won't like is putting on all the make up! BTW Aly pointed out I would need a big cigarette...I thought that was funny that she noticed that, so I will probably have to buy that too!

Dinners for the week

In an effort to try and get our meals more cohesive I have made a menu for the week that should work for everyone on different nights. Here is what I have for the week:

Sunday: Salmon with terriyaki sauce, artichokes, rice a roni, and garlic bread
Monday: Honey lemon chicken breasts, rice, broccoli, and apple slices
Tuesday: Steak, Parmesan cheese noodles, salad, and raspberries
Wednesday: Home made pizza
Thursday: Buffalo burgers and hot dogs as well as home made french fries
Friday: Pizza casserole
Saturday: Steak, rice a roni, salad, and garlic bread

I think Daddy ends up being mostly pleased here. He will eat the meat dishes and vegetables but won't eat the carbs. The kids will eat the carbs and some of the meat dishes and when Daddy is playing volleyball we get the pizza and pasta! So I will see how this works out and try to plan menus each week where there is something on the dinner table that everyone will like. I will let you know at the end of the week how it worked.

Do you have any family favorite meals? I would love some ideas!

Cooking for my family is no easy chore

My Grandma often complained I was hard to cook for, mostly because I don't like ham and fig cookies. I have to say though, my family is almost impossible to cook for! Well, I think Aly and I could enjoy dinners together but KK and Daddy make it impossible.

Daddy has that whole Atkins philosophy so he wants meat, protein, meat, protein, and no carbs or sugar! KK doesn't like any meat except chicken and doesn't like pasta either. Aly and I are pasta lovers and prefer less meat!

Seriously, either I please hubby, Aly and I, or KK. I can't seem to please all four of us at once! The closest I get is home made pizza but hubby won't eat it due to the carbs. I use whole wheat flour and add flax seed but he won't eat it!

When I make pasta I only use whole wheat/whole grain as well but Daddy won't eat it and KK doesn't like pasta.

So seriously, how do I cook for this family? Hubby and I both like Chinese and Indian food but that isn't child friendly. I am running out of ideas and getting far too frustrated with the whole dinner thing!

What do you do? Do you have a favorite website with family dinner ideas? What would you do if your family was so particular? I can't be a short order cook and I can't please everyone!

Copy Mom

This year I will be volunteering in Aly's class as the copy mom. What a perfect job for me when I have a four year old helper in tow! Actually, when I was teaching, it was one of my favorite things that parent volunteers did for me. It really helps save a lot of prep time for the teacher.

Since I am subbing it is too hard to commit to volunteering a specific day in the classroom. Teachers come to depend on their classroom volunteers and if I have to cancel due to subbing it can be really difficult for the teacher. So that is why being a copy mom is great for me! We have it set up so that I check for copy work on Mondays and Fridays. If I get a sub job I could always do some of it during my break, or do the copy work the next day.

The only downfall is I won't be helping Aly in the classroom. However, I will be there on party days. KK can be pretty disruptive to the class so it really isn't fair to bring her along unless it is an activity that she can't disrupt.

Crazy Hair Day

Aly has school spirit week at school. They are all having fun dressing up everyday. On Monday it was pajama day, on Tuesday it was crazy hair day, and on Wednesday it is sport's day. Aly had lots of fun with crazy hair day and even let me spray paint colors in it.

Don't worry, it was washable paint and it all washed out just fine!

Our annual trip to the fair

Over Labor Day weekend every year we travel to Burney to go to the local fair. My father loved it and he has a memory plaque there that we visit. This year the kids had a blast. Sticker Grandma bought them unlimited ride wrist bands and they had a great time going on rides. Do you know what their favorite part was? That the rides were small enough for them to ride on alone! Their two favorite rides were the dinosaur roller coaster and the fun house!

Shhh, don't tell Daddy but they also got to have cotton candy for the first time! They loved it! Aly wants to try the blue kind next time.

Aly's Settling In

Aly has now been in her new class for three weeks. Last week towards the end of the week she was finally settling in and starting to feel comfortable in her new class. She has made a few second grade friends and seems to really be latching on to the only other first grade girl in her class. She is lucky that the other first grade girl Josie is a total sweetheart! She has been really nice to Aly and really watched out for her. In fact, they started new reading groups together on Monday and had to go to a new second grade teacher. When Aly heard about it she was really scared. Thank goodness for Josie though, she held her hand and the teacher let the two girls sit next to each other.

My hubby pointed out that this could help her in the future. Getting to know the older kids and learning to feel comfortable around them will help her in the future as we are sure they will continue to place her in combination classes due to her academic advances.

Her teacher really is great! I can't believe how much she has taught her in only three weeks! Aly does love her teacher and really wants to please her on a daily basis. She has gone from having messy handwriting, to extremely neat writing. She has learned to write correctly with lowercase letters and upper case for capitals. She is doing great separating words with finger spacing. She is even learning new books she wants to read. She wants to start reading Cam Jansen books which I am excited for her as it will be her first chapter book series that she will read alone. Up until now we were reading to her as she still preferred reading picture books to herself.

So I am hoping things will continue to go well. No mom likes her child crying everyday not wanting to go to school. Wish us luck!

Aly's journal writing

Look at Aly's journal paper that she wrote at school today. I think she did a great job with her finger spacing and spelling. It says: I have a dog and she is crazy. She is a Golden Retriever light yellow. She runs realy fast!
