Baby chicks are starting to get their feathers in

The baby chicks are growing fast.  They are starting to get their feathers in!  The girls are doing a good job taking complete care of them.  Mommy made the rule that she would take care of the adult chickens but the girls were completely responsible for the care of the baby chicks!

Our first egg

Good news and bad news...the next day after receiving our hens we found one dead in the coop.  :-(     The owner said she was old and the move must have stressed her out and she died.

The good news is we got our first egg.

The girls get their baby chicks

Daddy and the girls got their way and picked out 6 baby chicks this afternoon.  We will set them up in the garage with a heat lamp.  We took some pictures of the cards that show the various breeds we picked.  There is a 90% chance they are girls..we shall see in time.

Mommy gets her laying hens

As luck would have it someone posted they wanted to get rid of laying hens and a rooster.  The ad wanted us to take 5 hens and a rooster but we asked for a compromise to 3 hens and a rooster.  Hubby had to finish the ground of the chicken coop.  He had to lay wire down so nothing could dig in.  Meanwhile the girls and myself got tan bark from the large pile of all the trees PGE cut down and the branches they chipped.

Look at them in the coop.

Silly Summer

Meanwhile, while Daddy is building the chicken coop, Summer is being totally silly.

Preparing for chickens

Ed spent the day building a chicken enclosure and two coops.  We are going to have chickens.  We have spent much time talking over what we want our flock to look like.  I want adult hens already laying and Ed wants day old baby chicks to raise.  The dogs don't care as long as they can scrounge some of their food...lol

We live in coyote, bear, raccoon, skunk, mountain lion country so they must have a fully enclosed structure for at night to keep protected.

The dogs are enjoying watching the whole process.  Too bad they couldn't help..I mean, after all they are such great diggers.

Alyssa decided to help Daddy build the coops.

Comet is all tired out from all of that supervising!
